Can you potty train a pet parrot?

parrot training
jimistafford1 asked:

Im getting an african grey soon, although pooing isn’t a big trouble it would be nice for him/her to be potty trained and was wondering if it is possible to potty train an parrot/african grey?
I dont mean making them poop on command Im saying that I want him her to poop in a particular spot they can poop any time of day and night but just in a particular spot

There are those that profess that they can train them to “Go”??

But a bird cannot control it’s bowel movements, when it has to go it goes ,no matter where it is.

It may Go in the same area of it’s cage,at seemingly the same time, but when it has to Go it will just Go.

you can but let me ask you something ? would you like someone training you to poop on command ? I dont like the idea of someone training a bird to do this . I am a parrot owner and let me tell you I have never done this and think it is unfair of an owner to expect a bird or any other animal to poop or pee on command . good luck .

Don’t have a lot of time to answer, but YES you can teach your parrot to be potty trained!! Don’t listen to the people on here that have no idea what you’re talking about; I know people that have done it and with a lot of work it can work.

You may want to go here and ask other people who have Greys:

But I know my Eclectus doesnt like to go on his playstand or his cage, he flies somewhere else to go

    Yes they can!

And there is nothing wrong with giving them a Potty Perch - just like we have toilets!!!

And they can too control it! Becareful when training. You want to show them where to potty - not when to potty. There is a difference. If you teach them to ‘potty on command’ - they can hold it, and hold it, and hold it - even to death (I’m told by an experienced parrot breeder)

My conures have done very well. Atleast on trying not to poo on us! At this point the furniture is a different story. We’re working on it.
You’ll learn their signals of when they have to go.

And it is NOT necessarily hard - or alot of work.
Each bird is different. It could come quite easy.

They do have ‘accidents.’ It’s not going to be 100% of the time, but the fact that it is some of the time - it’s very nice!

Strive for most of the time, be elated with some of the time!
